Porvorim: Water Resources Minister Vinod Palyekar said on Tuesday that the Karnataka government has already diverted the Mhadei River to Kalsa-Bhandura and the Goa government will file a petition before the Mhadei Water Disputes Tribunal.

"Our team will file an application tomorrow (Wednesday) before the court. Digging work has been carried out at the Kalsa-Bhanduri nullah. The flow of water towards the Malaphrabha (river) basin, "Palyekar said.

Goa, Karnataka, and Maharashtra are in the middle of a legal battle over the Kalsa-Bhandura dam project across the waters of the Mhadei river.

TOI had reported on July 23 that the diversion by Karnataka had reduced the flow to Goa's Barazan and Ladkem waterfalls. The two waterfalls are part of the Kalsa tributary that eventually merges with the Mandovi. And to make matters worse, Karnataka also dumped mud and stones along the tributary.

A team of officials from Goa's water resources department (WRD) visited the site at Kankumbi, close to Goa's border on July 23 and confirmed that the obstructions raised in the Kalsa tributary of the Mhadei river are diverting a huge flow of monsoonal water .

The diversions were from three streams – Amyacho Vhal, Kasturicho Vhal and Chigalyacho Vhal – in the Malaprabha basin. The water is being diverted from the three important sources of the tributary through an inter-connecting open cut and underground cbads.
