The ancient legend of Springbok has succumbed to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a form of MND in 2017, as a result of a six-year battle against the disease.
MND has been described as a patient trapped inside his body, deteriorating to the point where no movement is possible.
The clinic aims to facilitate the progression of the MND while scientists around the world seek a cure.
"What really mattered to Joost was to provide care to people who can not get it themselves because of lack of resources," said Odette Schwegler of JCN center.
Joost's brother, Pieter van der Westhuisen, told the media that the opening of the clinic is a dream come true.
"It's a great honor for us and a privilege to be here, one of Joost's dreams has come true, with a lot of work." It's really great that his dream is fulfilled. "
Van der Westhuisen says that families whose loved ones suffer from MND must cherish the moments they have together.
"It is not easy, it is very difficult to stay positive and treat the person with MND with respect and love. Both sides will be angry and all I can say is to make as many memories as you can. "
