There is not yet a magic pill for immortality, but it's no secret that a good diet and regular exercise can help prevent illness and the disease in your old age.

To decipher exactly how many extra years this research has allowed you to meet 1,500 Australian adults over 50 and follow them for a decade.

Results revealed that fitness enthusiasts had done more than 5,000 metabolic equivalent minutes (MET minutes) each week – about 600 minutes of moderately intense exercise – were twice as likely to avoid stroke, heart disease, angina, cancer and diabetes.

Associate Professor Bamini Gopinath, of the University of Sydney, says that the probability of surviving 10 more years.

It's an amazing feat, just to put on sneakers and take a walk, but is it so simple?

The World Health Organization recommends each individual to do at least 600 minutes MET of physical activity per week

This equates to 150 minutes of brisk walking or 75 minutes of running, something that people over the age of 50 could first struggle to do.

In order to complete the required 5,000 minutes MET to fully enjoy the benefits of (almost) eternal youth, you will have to walk for 21 hours or run for 10.5 hours

. But we encourage inactive older adults to do physical activity, and those who are currently exercising moderately to incorporate more vigorous activity.

For those who do not want to pound the pavement every week, you can burn as many kilojoules while swimming and doing yoga – you just have to have the good times.

Ballroom dancing burns 1142 kilojoules hour, power yoga burns 1522 and aquatic aerobics burns 2096 for the average of 90kg.
