The last AKA album Touch My Blood was released for over a month (it fell on June 15 ). The album has been downloaded over 365,674 times on the free file hosting siteDataFileHost alone. The numbers are obviously higher. This instance comes from a download. There are also other sites like Fakaza that are popular for making albums available illegally.

TMB became gold (15,000 copies sold) in its first week of publication. But the rapper thinks these numbers do not add up. In a Twitter diatribe, Supa Mega asked why he had more than 3 million followers on Twitter, but he struggles to sell serious albums.

The rapper did everything he said last album. He encouraged his fans to draw the cover of TMB, in the #TouchMyBloodChallenge, a few months before its release. Then there were billboards hanging on some of the busiest roads in Joburg, and then there was a media run before it was released.

Weak sales are not a unique problem at AKA. His rival Cbadper Nyovest, whose three albums all sold at least 30,000 copies, also has millions of followers on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, but he has never sold six figures (like most SA artists). Kwesta has the best-selling hip-hop album of all time in South Africa – its double album DaKAR II of 2016 has moved to 210,000 copies (7 times platinum)

Divinity of House Music Black Coffee at an event in which he presented a new platform for emerging artists yesterday, asked why mega stars like Brenda Fbadie and Zahara n Have never sold their albums in millions. Just like most of us, the DJ and the producer do not have the answers.

So, AKA is not alone in this fight. There are many factors leading to low sales in South Africa. The most obvious is, of course, poverty – 55.5% of the population of South Africa lives below the poverty line; survive with less than R1000 per month. An album is R100 … you do the math.

Supa Mega took a lot of flack from some tweeps who called him for the right, while the Megacy (as his fanbase is known) tweeted pictures of their paper copies of Touch My Blood .

Touch My Blood was one of the most anticipated albums of 2018 in South Africa. There were among others OkMalumKoolKat, Yanga Chief, JR, Kiddominant, L-Tido and Stogie T. Revisit our album cover here
