President Emmerson Mnangagwa only has a short lead over opposition leader Nelson Chamisa ahead of the July 30 parliamentary elections in Zimbabwe, according to a poll released Friday.
The Afrobarometer poll placed Mnangagwa at 40% and Chamisa at 37%. There was now a "reasonable chance" that the opposition champion could win after a surge in popularity.
The advantage of Mnangagwa is reduced by 11 points in early May to 3 percentage points.
The poll found that the 2,400 people surveyed expressed concern about litigation or military intervention, the poll said.
Last year, after the generals took power, the former ally Mnangagwa was overthrown in power.
