Having made a bold statement in music, Deborah Oluwaseyi Joshua aka Seyi Shay, is carving out a place in Nollywood. With a new film, Lara and the Beats where she starred and presented alongside the best artists, the singer turned actor is ready to break the glbad ceiling in the industry.
In this cat, Seyi Shay talks about the sacrifices she's made to appear in the film and its relationship with Vector, among others. Enjoy it
You're a musician, but you played in Lara and the Beats, what does it mean to be an actress?
There is a slight difference because I write my own music and I play it. I tend not to do the same, but with a movie, you have to adopt a character. It's quite different since you have to immerse yourself in the character you invent. It's a bit of a belief, at the same time, it's always entertaining.
What sacrifices did you make to be part of the film?
I had to leave my singing career for about a month, because the hours spent on the set were very long, so I could not go to the studio and do my own shows. I lost some gigs but I did a great movie. So, I am happy.
Were you worried about when you stopped singing?
I was a little worried about spending so much time outside the music scene. I thought it would work against me but luckily it did not work. This situation added to my profile and personality. By the time the movie comes out, it would add to my popularity. It's nice to have another category added to my resume
Would you take more movie roles?
I had actually said that I would not take over roles, because it was long and tiring. As a musician, the longest you do is six to eight hours to shoot a video clip, but it took more than a month to go. Midway, I was like – oh my god, why did I do that? I wanted to be able to go back in time. But at the end of the film, I was really satisfied with myself, watching snippets of myself on the movie screen. So, would I do it again? Yes, with this production.
What is Lara and the Beats?
Lara is a baby who has a wonderful sister named, Dara. Their parents are dead, so his uncle benefits from the trust fund and wastes all that's left of them and they have to make a great adjustment of grace to the grbad. They had to make their way through life. What you see as the public is the journey between wealth and rags, and the journey to glory. I really wanted to prove a point, that is my main reason for baduming this role. It's my first role and I have felt immersed in a deep end, but I handle the pressure well. I love challenges. I felt like I had come so far, and it was time to venture into something new, and I had the impression that playing in a movie was the best thing.
How was it working with Vector? have a long history. It is one of the reasons why I stayed in the Nigerian music industry. I was glad that it was him and no one else. It was easy to work with him. He was one of the first friends of the music that I had when I moved to Nigeria. He showed me the ropes and he did the Irawo remix. It was easy to work with him
Could there be something more for you two?
I do not think Lara and the Beats got married but the chemistry he needed was there.
There were photos of you and Kiss Daniel flying on social networks, could you tell us what's going on between you two?
Kiss Daniel and I shot a new video, and when he falls, I'll talk about it.
How did you work with the big stars of the movie?
I'm pretty fortunate because there are so many big stars in this movie and it's not often your debut in a movie. movie, playing the main role. Everyone was nice to me as if it was my first role in the cinema. I had daily coaching and drama clbades of different actors.
If you were not Seyi Shay, do you think they would have treated you differently?
No, I do not think Chioma cared about me. she is very professional and everyone on the set was there for one thing, and it was to make sure that the movie was excellent
How to Beat the Challenges?
I think it's not always important to show the challenges you have. Sometimes, just make it easy for people and why it's called showbiz. The bottom line is that I make sure to work hard and that is really it. I overcame the obstacles
by the grace of God and, of course, I am not perfect. I have so many problems, but as long as people understand that the job is really the message, then it's cool.
