Another Chinese phone maker wants to attack the US market. But this one already has a foot in the door of diverted way.

Oppo, one of the largest smartphone players in China, intends to enter the US market, said Alen Wu, head of the company's overseas operations, in an interview with an interpreter. Wu was not precise about the timing, but he said that he wanted to wait for Oppo to gain ground in Europe.

"The European market is definitely a tough one, so you have to be patient," Wu said on Friday before the MWC show. He noted that it had taken Huawei about a decade to establish a leadership position there.

Oppo is the latest Chinese company to announce its intentions in the US market after OnePlus, as well as other Chinese phone manufacturers TCL and ZTE. But his remarks arrive at a tenuous moment, because of the tensions between China and the United States due to the spectrum of tariffs, and strong proclamations of the United States on the security concerns concerning Huawei. ZTE itself is trying to make a comeback after settling a dispute with the US Department of Commerce which resulted in devastating penalties.

You may not have heard of Oppo, but if you are passionate about the phone, you have heard of OnePlus. Oppo, OnePlus and Vivo belong to a Chinese conglomerate called BKK Electronics. OnePlus, which was initially an exclusively online provider of affordable but high-end phones, has burst into the market. United States in an agreement with T-Mobile last year. Oppo hopes that OnePlus and other Chinese phone manufacturers will lead the way in the market.

Wu pointed out that Oppo and OnePlus are independently managed, but said their leaders have a close relationship.

"They can be very big or very small and beautiful, but they have to have their own characteristics," Wu said about the dynamics between Oppo, OnePlus and Vivo.

In a nod to the world's leading Samsung, Wu said he's been inspired by the Korean tech giant when it came to using design. and color in his products.

Unlike Huawei, which has ambitious targets to supplant Samsung, Wu said he was more focused on the product than on the rankings.

"We never thought about size or market share, or even profitability," said Wu, adding that his priority was to create "fascinating products" for consumers.
