Rep. Mark Green, R-Tenn., This week called on U.S. Air Force Academy professor Lynne Chandler Garcia to be fired after publicly advocating for military academies to teach critical race theory to new cadets. .

In a letter to Acting Secretary of the Air Force John Roth, Green, a West Point graduate, argued Garcia’s position on critical race theory in a recent Washington Post editorial “Render[ed] she is not qualified to teach in one of our prestigious military academies. Garcia is an associate professor of political science at the Air Force Academy.

“Critical Race Theory teaches that the only way to remedy past racial discrimination is current racial discrimination,” Green wrote in the letter. “This teaching is totally incompatible with the principles of the Declaration of Independence and the Civil Rights Movement, not to say illegal.

“Our country has already lived through a horrible time when people were judged on the color of their skin rather than the content of their character – we must never go back to that way of thinking,” he added.

Green made his call for Garcia’s sacking amid a larger clash between GOP lawmakers and military leaders over critical race theory. General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, defended his study during a tense House Armed Services Committee hearing last month, saying it was important that cadets and military officers “be open-minded and widely read” on concepts across the ideological spectrum.

Milley’s fiery response at the hearing served as the basis for Garcia’s column.
