NEWARK, N.J. (AP) – The smoke reported aboard an Air Transat flight forced an emergency landing Saturday at a New Jersey airport, where the 189 passengers were evacuated by emergency slips.
Air Transat flight 942 was en route from Montreal to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, when it reported a possible fire in the cargo bay and was diverted to Newark Liberty International Airport at 8:30 am Saturday, said a spokesman for Air Transat. Federal Aviation Administration.
The Boeing 737 landed and stayed on the runway while airport firefighters reacted and passengers were evacuated via emergency barriers, she said. The passengers were then driven by bus to the terminal.
Two of the 189 passengers reported minor injuries, not related to the smoke, and one was taken to a hospital for examination, said Steve Coleman, deputy director of media relations at the Port Authority.
