Al fresco dining at theme parks: LA County closes its doors

Just as more deals open at California theme parks, cases of COVID-19 continue to rise – and counties are closing. Los Angeles County – which has consistently had a high number of COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began to spread in the United States – is shutting down alfresco dining starting next week.

The announcement comes shortly after California Governor Gavin Newsom imposed a statewide curfew.

LA County – where Universal Studios Hollywood is located – is shutting down al fresco dining at restaurants, breweries, wineries and bars starting Wednesday, November 25. All LA County restaurants have been outdoors for months, but businesses will now need to be take out. -only / to-go instead. Al fresco dining has been permitted in the Violet Level / Level 1 of the California Plan for a Safer Economy. However, as COVID-19 cases have reached a five-day average of 4,000 or more, the county is closing even more.

“To reduce the possibility of overcrowding and the potential for exposure in settings where people do not wear face masks, restaurants, breweries, wineries and bars will only be able to offer take-out, drive-thru and delivery service, ”the Health department said, according to local news source KTLA 5.

“In-person meals will not be allowed, at a minimum, for the next 3 weeks,” health officials said.

As theme park fans, we want you to know how this applies to some of our favorite destinations right now. Although its Los Angeles-based theme park is currently closed (and has been since March), Universal Studios Hollywood has been operating Universal CityWalk Hollywood since June. Stores and restaurants have been welcoming patrons for shopping and al fresco dining (as well as takeout) for months, even as the county is in the most restrictive purple level. Universal has also just opened a take-out snack and drink spot for Butter Beer and other goodies from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

At this time, Universal has not announced the closure of CityWalk. Presumably it will remain open for take-out only, with places like The Wizarding World of Harry Potter ™ —Swets & Treats still able to accommodate guests. Note that this outdoor eating ban is currently in Los Angeles County, so it applies to Universal CityWalk Hollywood. This ban on eating outdoors Not Applicable in Orange County, where the Disneyland Resort is located.
