Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth couldn’t hold back their frustration over Eagles coach Doug Pederson’s decision to bench Jalen Hurts for Nate Sudfeld.
Pederson’s quarterback move harpooned any chance the Eagles had to rally Washington in the 20-14 loss, giving NFC East to their rival.
“Al, I couldn’t have done it. I couldn’t have done what Philadelphia did. Collinsworth said from the NBC booth. “I just couldn’t have done it. There are men who are fighting to try to win the game. And I’m not saying, I’m not blaming anyone, personally I couldn’t have done what they did.
The Giants players agreed that several of them were expressing their anger on Twitter as they watched their NFC East chances slip away helpless after beating the Cowboys earlier on Sunday.
The Philadelphia-Washington game was folded Sunday night because it was the only game guaranteed to determine a playoff spot. Pederson’s controversial appeal gave the high-stakes game a pre-season feel.
Hurts, the explosive rookie, had made just 7 of 20 passes in three quarters, but rushed for two touchdowns. Sudfeld hadn’t played in a game since 2018 and had attempted 20 assists in his four-year career before Sunday night.
Sudfeld made an interception on his first possession, then failed to handle a low slam on the next, which Chase Young quickly recovered for Washington.
“[If] they’re running out, yeah. And we mentioned it yesterday, Doug said he wanted to bring Sudfeld into the game. But in this circumstance? Come on, Michaels said.
Michaels later added, “[Hurts] the numbers weren’t that good, but a few rushed touchdowns, and clearly a guy who is a big part of the conversation going forward. And the giants must be beside themselves, and who can blame them?
On the game’s last disc, Michaels joked that he would bring back a call from “41 years ago” referring to his famous “Do you believe in miracles?” call of the 1980 Olympics.
This end was foreseeable, however.
