Alabama head football coach Nick Saban announced on Tuesday the addition of Todd Watson to the Alabama football staff as a special assistant to the head coach.
Watson joins the Alabama staff after three seasons at the University of Tennessee where he spent two of those years as director of football operations and his final season as director of football programming.
In Alabama, Watson will assist the head coach with a myriad of responsibilities, including high school relations, offensive and special team game preparations and breakdowns, while also helping out at camps and clinics.
“Todd has a long history as a successful high school coach in Alabama and most recently in the varsity game on the operations side,” Saban said in a statement. “We are delighted to add his knowledge and experience to our staff. Todd has always been someone we have had the greatest respect for as a person and a coach.”
Prior to his stint at Knoxville, Watson served as director of operations and high school relations in Troy from 2015 to 2017. The Trojans combined to go 20-5 in his last two seasons and shared the Sun Belt Championship with Appalachian State in 2017.
Watson was one of Alabama’s most successful high school coaches before joining Troy’s staff. He posted an 80-36 record in 10 seasons as a head coach at Foley High School, where he coached former Alabama star player and Atlanta Falcons All-Pro Julio Jones , as well as future NFL players such as Robert Lester and DJ Fluker.
“It is an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to work for the richest program in college football history,” Watson said in a statement. “My family and I are excited to be back in the great state of Alabama and look forward to being on Coach Saban’s staff.”
Watson graduated in 1993 from the University of Mobile. He and his wife, Christie, have two daughters LeighAshton and Micah, and a son-in-law, Seth Nuss.
While the appropriate members of the Board of Trustees have been advised of the proposed terms and conditions of this proposed appointment, the financial terms remain subject to the approval of the Board of Trustees.
