An Alabama military base has announced it will require proof of coronavirus vaccination for service members who wish to dispense with face masks while on duty.

Fort Rucker has updated its guidance in the face of the growing threat of the Delta variant of COVID-19. The variant quickly grew to become the dominant strain of COVID-19 in the United States

Major General David Francis, commanding general, announced the new direction in a video posted Tuesday on the Fort Rucker Facebook page.

“Due to rising rates in the counties around us and some in Fort Rucker, we are now implementing GO number 12,” Francis said. “The big difference is going to be that if you don’t wear a mask, the leaders can ask you, ask the soldiers, to prove that they have been vaccinated by showing their vaccination record.”

The new guidelines only apply to uniformed personnel, who represent about 5,000 people posted to the base, according to Stars and Stripes.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby reported that about 70% of the military have received at least one dose of a vaccine against the coronavirus.

“It’s encouraging, but there is still work to be done, so we continue to encourage troops to get the maximum immunization,” Kriby said. “This measure is very important so that we can nip this in the bud.”
