Alanis Morissette claims she was raped by several men as a 15-year-old Canadian pop star in a new documentary for HBO, The Washington Post reports. The legal age of consent in Canada is 16.
“It took me years of therapy to even admit that there had been any victimization on my part,” the now 47-year-old singer said in the doc. “I would always say I was consenting, then I would be reminded ‘Hey, you were 15, you are not consenting at 15.'”
“Now I’m like, ‘Oh yeah, they’re all pedophiles. This is only statutory rape, ”she added.
Morissette has not disclosed the identity of her alleged attackers.
“I said that to a few people and it kind of fell on deaf ears,” the singer also revealed. “It would usually be a standing moment, out of the room.”
The alleged sexual assaults allegedly took place in the late 1980s while she was recording demos for Geffen Records – several years before her chart-topping album “Jagged Little Pill” was released by Maverick Records in 1995.
Despite her collaboration with award-winning director Alison Klayman on “Jagged,” Morissette is “unhappy” with the final product and refuses to attend the documentary’s premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, according to the WaPo report.
Page Six contacted Morissette’s representatives, but they did not immediately respond.
The doc won’t be Morissette’s first time speaking about sexual assault in the music industry.
In a 2020 interview with The Sunday Times, Morissette strongly hinted that a #MeToo movement would likely shake up the music industry in the years to come.
“Almost all the women in the music industry have been assaulted, harassed, raped. It’s ubiquitous – more in music, even in movies, ”she said.
