LA Times columnist calls Larry Elder a “very real threat to communities of color”

Los Angeles Times columnist Jean Guerrero said Sunday that Republican candidate for governor of California, Larry Elder, posed a “very real threat to communities of color.”

Guerrero has appeared on CNN’s “Reliable Sources” to discuss the September 14 recall election for the governor of California. Host Brian Stelter asked Guerrero about Elder, the Republican frontrunner who has faced intense criticism from the Los Angeles Times and other media in the past.

Stelter asked if Elder was acting on a “Trump playbook” in the state to avoid the often negative media coverage of him. Guerrero agreed, saying Elder had only appeared and spoke with experts in the right-wing media.

“He has refused to speak to non-partisan media and journalists who criticize him, refused to answer tough questions, often uses the few interviews he gives as an opportunity to give a performance on social media, denouncing these journalists, playing the victim, “Guerrero said.

Elder mocked an older Los Angeles Times article titled “Column: Larry Elder is the Black Face of White Supremacy. You’ve Been Warned.” Guerrero criticized Elder for “refusing to engage” with the substance of the criticism.

“He was able to reach the minority of voters in California who embrace his worldview of white supremacy. He co-opted this line by my fellow headline columnist calling him” the black face of white supremacy “but he refuses to engage with the real substance of our reporting, ”Guerrero said.

Guerrero added that Elder, a black man, “poses a very real threat to communities of color.”

“You know, the idea that his views were shaped by a well-known white supremacist named Jared Taylor whom he quoted several times in his early writings that he plans to reverse all state progress on immigrant rights and social justice and that it poses a very real threat to communities of color for all the reasons we have reported in the past, ”Guerrero said.

“Obviously, the LA Times opinion people were very against Elder,” Stelter commented.

Elder criticized the LA Times’ coverage of his campaign.

“This isn’t the first time the LA Times has attacked me, there’s another writer who almost called me Black David Duke,” Elder said. “They are scared to death.”
