Delta variant COVID-19 infections carry a viral load 300 times that of individuals infected with the original strain, according to a South Korean study.
But the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) said on Tuesday that the load decreases over time, and on the fourth day, it decreases to 30 times more. It corresponds to the viral loads of the other variants after 10 days, Reuters reported.
Health Ministry official Lee Sang-won told a news conference that the increased burden indicates the virus is more transmissible, which could lead to more cases and hospitalizations.

“But that doesn’t mean Delta is 300 times more contagious… we think its transmission rate is 1.6 times the Alpha variant and about twice the original version of the virus,” Lee said, according to Reuters.
The study compared the viral load of 1,848 patients who contracted the delta variant with 22,106 people infected with other strains.
The rapid spread of the delta variant in the United States and around the world has led to a series of measures to reduce the spread, including the reintroduction of mask warrants into interior spaces. Likewise, various American localities have immunization mandates implemented, which top health experts believe may become more common with full Food and Drug Administration approval (FDA) Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccines.
