Alaska ‘3REICH’ and ‘FUHRER’ license plates spotted, state must investigate

After license plates reading “3REICH” and “FUHRER” are seen in Alaska, the state government will investigate how and why it approved these vanity plates.

Matt Tunseth, a former reporter, spotted the “3REICH” plate on a Hummer in Anchorage on Friday and tweeted a photo, captioned: “I hate the Nazis in Alaska.”

The Alaska Department of Administration said Monday it had recalled the two Nazi-themed plaques and issued standard replacement plaques to their owner. Commissioner Kelly Tshibaka said law enforcement had been told the plates were not allowed and therefore illegal.

Both plates were recorded on a Hummer H2, according to state records.

“I am calling for a review of the DMV guidelines and processes to determine how these plates were issued,” Tshibaka said in a statement posted on Facebook.

Anchorage MP Jamie Allard lost her place on the state’s human rights committee after defending the plates, writing in deleted Facebook posts since “reich” and “fuhrer” were simply normal German words and unclear references to Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime.

Governor Mike Dunleavy removed him from his post on Tuesday, KAKM, an Alaska NPR affiliate, reported.

“I don’t think it should be difficult to denounce white supremacy,” Assembly Speaker Felix Rivera told KAKM. “It should be really easy, in fact, to denounce white supremacy and the Nazis. It is therefore unfortunate that Assembly Member Allard was not able to do the right thing and, frankly, easy.
