Progressive House superstar Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has approved Ed Markey in a Massachusetts Democratic primary that could pit the outgoing Senator against a Congressman with the same name, Joe Kennedy III.
Ocasio-Cortez's decision to publicly rally Markey adds extra support, which Markey builds in anticipation of a potential confrontation with the mighty Kennedy Dynasty. Kennedy, 38, is a grandson of the late Robert F. Kennedy and, like Markey, a progressive democrat.
Markey, 73, is the main sponsor in the Senate of the Green New Deal, presented by Ocasio-Cortez in the House this year. He is seeking a second term in November 2020.
"Ed Markey is a proud and powerful progressive champion of working families," Ocasio-Cortez said in a promotional video. "Not only in Massachusetts, but across the country."
Markey is striving to gain support from Massachusetts' top officials following Kennedy's announcement of the gravity of the Senate.
In August, Kennedy formed an Exploratory Committee to determine whether to challenge Markey's candidacy for the Democratic Party in the November 2020 vote. "I hear people saying that I should wait for my turn, but with everything. the respect I owe you, I'm not sure it's a moment of waiting, "wrote Kennedy.
The Kennedy have claimed a Senate seat in the state of the Bay for decades. Ted Kennedy sat in the Senate from 1962 to his death in 2009. He succeeded his elder brother John, elected for the first time in 1952 and who had left the Senate when he was elected to the presidency.
Joe Kennedy III was elected to the House of Commons in 2012. His father, Joe Kennedy II, sat in the House of Commons from 1987 to 1999.
In the video, Ocasio-Cortez identified Markey as one of the strongest progressives in the Senate. Markey was alongside Ocasio-Cortez in front of the Capitol when she introduced the Green New Deal to the House. Many Democrats have described the plan as too broad and unrealistic, including the senatorial minority whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill.
Ocasio-Cortez thanked Markey for supporting the plan alongside her despite the critics.
"When I arrived at the Congress and began to discuss big bold projects – a solution to the crisis – many members hesitated," Ocasio-Cortez said. "Many people said we could not do too much. We can not go too fast to continue the change for the American people. "
"And Ed Markey was one of the few people to have had the courage to stand up and try his luck," she said. "And take a chance on a new congressman, and take a chance on this."
