Alistair Overeem issues statement after TKO loss to Alexander Volkov

Alistair Overeem’s latest push for a UFC heavyweight title apparently ended on Saturday night when Alexander Volkov took down the Dutch kickboxer and left him with a bloody pile on the canvas (watch the highlights here).

For two laps, Volkov deflected Overeem’s punches and shrugged, cutting off Alistair’s defense with increasing ease and slicing his face in the process. In the second round, “The Reem” was a mess. Two minutes later, and he was done. If you think Overeem looked weirdly shy in there, maybe it’s because he broke his nose at some point in the first one.

Through a statement posted via his Instagram, he details the disappointing loss.

“You are a real warrior Alexander Volkov. Congratulations on this victory! Overeem wrote. “Yesterday was not my night. I couldn’t get over that punch in the first round after I broke my nose. My highest priority right now is to heal and to spend some well-deserved time with the family. I’ll be back in the gym soon. Thank you all for your support! I see the comments, you are the best. “

Prior to this fight, there was a lot of emphasis on Alistair’s big push for a final title race. He went so far as to say that if he won the belt, he would retire that same night with everything in his career finally accomplished. But what happens now that all title hope is seemingly dashed? Overeem does not appear to be made from the tone of his statement.

Maybe he doesn’t want to come out like this. Maybe he’s still looking for a few fights to fill his bank account. Maybe a retreat fight in Europe every time the UFC is allowed to host events again in front of crowds?

We’re sure there will be more clarity soon, but for those of you worried (or hoping) that this was the last time we saw Alistair Overeem in the cage, the man doesn’t appear to be finished yet. The rest remains a mystery.
