Allegheny County saw a 39% drop in new covid-19 cases in January compared to December.
The latest report from the Ministry of Health shows a total of 15,559 cases reported in January. In December, health officials reported 25,405 new cases.
In January, an average of 502 new cases were reported per day, up from 820 per day in December.
On Monday, the health department reported 169 new cases – the lowest one-day report since November 2 (120). In the past two days, 402 new cases have been reported in Allegheny County, down 35% from a week ago (620).
From January 1 to 15, the county registered 9,549 new cases, while from January 16 to 31, there were 6,010.
Of the 402 newly reported cases, 366 were confirmed by 2,100 new PCR tests – from December 14 to Sunday. The county reports that one of the positive tests was in December, while four are over a week old.
Of the new cases, 36 are listed as probable. Health officials define a probable case as a case in which a patient has a positive viral antigen test or symptoms of covid with a “high risk exposure” to a person who has been confirmed to have a. coronavirus.
The county’s latest cases range from 2 months to 99 years, with a median age of 42.
Among the most recent cases – 211 women, 191 men – the age distribution is:
• From 0 to 4 years old: 13
• From 5 to 12 years old: 19
• 13 to 18 years old: 16
• 19 to 24 years old: 41
• 25 to 49 years old: 144
• 50 to 64 years old: 84
• 65 years and over: 85
The county has reported one new covid-related death in the past two days – starting Jan.10. Officials said the person was over 100 years old and associated with a long-term care facility.
Since the start of the pandemic in March, the county health department has reported a total of 1,454 deaths linked to covid-19. The state’s health department estimates the total number of deaths in Allegheny County at 1,521, a gap attributed to different reporting methods.
Despite the different reporting methods, county and state figures reflect a lower covid death rate in January compared to December. According to the county, 556 people died in December. Through January 21 – the most recent data available from the county – 109 died in January. The state reports that 608 residents of Allegheny County died in December, while 314 died in January (using figures through Saturday).
Hospitalizations also dropped significantly in the first month of 2021.
The month started with 697 county residents hospitalized with covid and ended with 311 – a drop of 55%. Among ICU patients, the number rose from 238 to 89, and for those on ventilators, it fell from 87 to 35.
Currently, according to the Open Data PA website, 313 residents of Allegheny County are hospitalized for covid-19, including 75 in intensive care and 32 on a ventilator.
Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 69,537 cases of covid-19 in Allegheny County, of which 55,192 have been confirmed by PCR testing. There were 337,918 residents who tested negative for the virus.
