Almost two-thirds of adults in Wisconsin have received the COVID-19 vaccine

MADISON, WB (WBAY) – Wisconsin health agencies, pharmacists and other vaccinators have administered more than 10,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine for the second day in a row, bringing the state to nearly 6.2 million ” shots in the arm ”since the start of the return vaccinations on December 13, 2020.

More than 5,800 people have completed their immunizations since the Department of Health Services report. To date, 3,039,805 Wisconsinites have received both doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or the Johnson & Johnson single-dose vaccine. This includes 62.8% of the adult population. That’s 52.2% of the state’s total population if you include the 14% who are too young to get the vaccine. The 16 to 17 age group reached 50% of their population receiving at least one dose of vaccine, just 5 months after these adolescents became eligible for vaccination; 44.8% completed their vaccination series.

DHS reports that 3,233,643 Wisconsin residents have received at least one dose, which comprises 66.5% – almost two-thirds – of all adults. It’s also 55.5% of the state’s population.

Despite the progress in vaccinations, deaths were in double digits again on Friday. DHS says 24 deaths in the past month have just been reported to the state, including 3 deaths in Dodge County, 2 in Waupaca County and 1 death each in Kewaunee and Waushara counties. The death toll increased by 23, to 7,740 lives lost; an exam that found a double-counted death or an out-of-state patient might explain the difference. The 7-day average fell from 11 to 13 deaths per day.

Tests also confirmed 2,350 new cases, well above the 7-day average of 1,538. Good news, the positivity rate has fallen again from an average of 7.9% to 7.7. % of all positive tests in the last 7 days. As we have repeatedly reported over the past year and a half, health experts have said the positivity rate would need to be below 3% to consider the spread of the virus manageable. The delta mutation is more contagious and spreads more easily than the original COVID-19 virus. The last report of the Wisconsin State Hygiene Laboratory shows that the delta variant accounts for 100% of case samples for a third consecutive week, although we should note that only 13 samples have received genetic testing so far in the past week.

We also reported that vaccinated people are better protected against the coronavirus, even though the delta variant is responsible for more breakthrough cases. We expect a state report next week on the number of cases, hospitalizations and deaths in August involving people who were fully vaccinated compared to those who had not completed their vaccinations or had never received a vaccine. . In July, the rate was 369.2 cases, 18.2 hospitalizations and 1.1 deaths per 100,000 people who were not fully vaccinated, and 125.4 cases, 4.9 hospitalizations and 0.1 deaths per 100 000 people who had at least two weeks after completing their vaccine. series.

In current hospitalizations, DHS figures show an additional 136 COVID-19 patients have been admitted in the past 24 hours. That’s above our 7-day average of 102 cases per day. The Wisconsin Hospital Association (WHA) reports that there were 1,047 patients in hospitals on Friday, 24 fewer than Thursday after accounting for discharges and deaths; 322 of them were in intensive care, 5 more than the day before.

The 10 hospitals in the Northeast Health Region treated 99 patients, 33 of whom were in intensive care; that’s 5 more in intensive care and 5 more patients overall since Thursday. The 13 hospitals in the Fox Valley area were caring for 88 COVID-19 patients, including 18 in intensive care; that’s two more in intensive care, but two fewer patients overall.

DHS reported that hospitalizations had increased 23% in the Northeast Healthcare region over the past two weeks, while the Fox Valley region showed no significant change.

The community vaccination clinic inside Fox River Mall in Grand Chute resumed today, September 9. Outagamie County Public Health says the clinic, near the food court and Scheels, will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on select dates until December 15. No appointment is required for this walk-in clinic. There is no charge and no ID is required. The list of dates will be updated on Outagamie County website.

Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, Oneida Nation and Options for Independent Living have announced that they are running free vaccination clinics at the NWTC. No appointment is necessary for the clinic, and anyone aged 12 or over is eligible for the vaccine.
