ALPENA – After several weeks without a mask warrant, Alpena public schools will require everyone to wear a mask to school starting Tuesday.

In a press release on Sunday, the school system says all K-12 students, employees, visitors and vendors, unless they have a documented medical exception or if wearing a face mask would not conform to a student’s individual education plan, must have a face coverings that must be worn during the school day and all indoor, afternoon or evening events related at school.

The school system is taking steps to avoid a full transition to distance learning due to the spread of COVID-19.

Thunder Bay Junior High School was remote last week due to a staff shortage due to COVID infections, quarantines and other illnesses. The number of students forced into quarantine is also increasing.

To date, 29 COVID-19 infections have been confirmed and 232 students are in quarantine due to close contact with an infected person.

“We are not taking this decision lightly,” the statement said. “In making this decision, we took into account the advice of the Center for Disease Control, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, our local health professionals and other leading health organizations.”

School system says it regularly works with local and regional health departments to assess the risk of community and school spread of COVID-19 and will continue to partner with the health department to continuously assess the need for a universal mandate. mask.
