Hulu has found a new Elizabeth Holmes. Monday, Deadline reported that Amanda Seyfried will replace Kate McKinnon in the limited series on Founder of Fraudster Theranos. This news a month after McKinnon, who was also to be one of the show’s executive producers. (The Saturday Night Live actress decided to quit the show for undisclosed reasons, although it was reported that this was due to scheduling issues.) Seyfried started on soap operas before roles on Veronica mars and Great love, but this will be her first live televised role since Twin Peaks: the return. The actress will also be the producer of the series, based on the ABC News podcast The Rise and Fall of Theranos, revealing the Holmes scam. Holmes, who was also the subject of Alex Gibney’s HBO documentary The inventor, was indicted by a federal jury in 2018 on nine counts of wire fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
McKinnon certainly looked a lot more like Holmes than Seyfried, but maybe if Seyfried could get the gruff facial expressions and the weird, low voice, she could be a convincing Holmes. It has already been a great year for Seyfried. The actor received his first Oscar nomination to play another real person, Citizen Kane star Marion Davies, in David Fincher Mank. Seyfried also stars in Netflix’s upcoming thriller Things Heard and Seen. The film is an adaptation of Elizabeth Brundage All things stop appearing and introduces Seyfried as a young woman who moves to a small town with her husband and discovers that her house holds sinister secrets.
According to Deadline, Hulu “plans an early summer” for The dropout.
