Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines 90% effective after two doses in real conditions, CDC study finds

With a full vaccination, the vaccines were 90% effective in preventing infections, including infections without symptoms. The study looked at how vaccines protected nearly 4,000 health workers and first responders. Study volunteers worked in eight locations across the country and were observed from mid-December to mid-March.

The CDC tested volunteers regularly, regardless of symptoms. The CDC also monitored the volunteers through text, email, and direct medical reports. The volunteers also took a nasal swab once a week.

Most of the volunteers, over 62%, had received both doses of a Pfizer or Moderna Covid-19 vaccine. More than 12% had received a single dose.

Of the 2,961 people vaccinated with one or more doses and the 989 unvaccinated participants, a total of 205 had a positive PCR test for Covid-19. One hundred and sixty-one infections were identified when participants were not vaccinated; eight were identified among those who were partially immune and three among those who were fully immune – more than 14 days after their second dose of the vaccine. Thirty-three identified cases were excluded because the person’s immune status was not clear.

More than 87% of Covid-19 cases presented with symptoms. Almost 23% of cases sought medical help. There were two hospitalizations, but no deaths.

The results of this study are similar to what scientists have seen in clinical trials for vaccines, but studies like this are important in showing the effectiveness of vaccines, especially in a population who, through their work , may encounter a large number of people who have Covid-19.

The results showing the level of protection from a single dose after two weeks are similar to the results of other recent studies in the UK and Israel.

“Reducing the risk of communicable infection, which can occur in people with an asymptomatic infection or in people several days before symptoms appear, is particularly important for health care workers, first responders and caregivers. other essential and frontline workers given their potential, frequent close contact with patients and the public, ”the report concludes.

“This study is extremely encouraging,” CDC director Dr Rochelle Walensky said on Monday during the White House briefing on Covid-19. “These results also underscore the importance of obtaining the recommended two doses of the vaccine in order to achieve the highest level of protection against Covid-19, especially as our concerns about the variants intensify.”

“Our national immunization efforts are working,” Walensky added.

The United States has gone to great lengths to get people vaccinated. As of Monday, nearly 29 percent of the U.S. population – more than 95 million people – have received at least one dose, and nearly 16 percent of the population – about 52.6 million people – are fully vaccinated, according to data from CDC. Among those aged 18 and over, more than one in five people are fully vaccinated.

“Get vaccinated when you can,” Walensky said. “So that all of these people we all love will still be here when this pandemic ends.”
