after two years of studies, the mauritshuis museum in the hague unveiled a panorama of 10 billion pixels of vermeer a girl with an earring. led by emilien leonhardt and vincent sabatier of hirox europe, the project was able to create an image with incredible resolution that allows people to see the painting at a detail of 4.4 microns per pixel. the project, which assesses the surface condition of the work of art, has brought to light other unknown discoveries about it.
Using the hirox 3D digital microscope, the team was able to capture an image of the artwork that allows you to zoom in on its surface, magnifying it up to 700 times – which was only possible once the girl is out of focus. to create this, the team placed the painting horizontally on a table while the microscope scanned the entire surface of a motorized stand above it. this generated a 20 billion pixel panoramic image at 35x magnification. then they took close-ups at 140x, which gave incredible scans of those details in 3D.
Through these macro-X fluorescence scans, research also revealed that vermeer painted eyelashes on the girl, contradicting the previous belief that they were left out to indicate an idealized face. tThey were also able to identify the pigments he used, including white lead from northern England, ultra navy blue lapis lazuli from Afghanistan and cochineal red made from insects in Mexico.
