Amazon Studios said it was "justified" to terminate his contract with Woody Allen.

The film and television distributor claimed that the American director's comments about the #MeToo movement had "sabotaged" his attempts to promote his films.

Allen sued the company, claiming that the company had dropped a four-film deal following further allegations that he molested his adopted daughter.

He strongly denies the charges, which emerged in 1992.

Aged 83, he is claiming more than $ 68 million in damages, alleging a breach of contract after Amazon Studios failed to release A Rainy Day In New York.

However, in an answer filed on Wednesday, the company asked a New York judge to dismiss some parts of the case, saying that she had reached an agreement with Allen in August 2017, two months before the charges against film producer Harvey Weinstein do not elicit a broader response. abuse in the entertainment industry.

Allen then "made a series of public comments suggesting that he had not grasped the seriousness of the issues or the implications for his own career," say the attorneys.

Sabotage

Allen was sympathetic to Weinstein and then accused his daughter, Dylan Farrow, of "cynically using the # MeToo movement," when she repeated her allegations that her father had mistreated her.

These comments came as Amazon Studios was trying to promote another of his films, Wonder Wheel, "effectively sabotaging these efforts," the company said.

Amazon pointed out that a number of actors have expressed regret for working with Allen and that stars such as Rachel Brosnahan, Colin Firth and Michael Caine have vowed never to do it again.

Allen would have stated that he "should be the spokesperson for the Me Too movement" because he "had been (only) accused by a woman in a child custody case".

"Understood in a broader context," said Amazon, "Allen's actions and their cascading consequences ensured that Amazon could never receive the benefit of its four-frame contract (though it was not a good thing). she has already paid Allen a $ 10 million advance when signing).

"As a result, Amazon was entitled to terminate its relationship with Allen and the plaintiffs will ultimately not recover any of the remedies sought."
