An Internet outage has hit some of the largest online sites in the United States, according to reports by the Downdetector.com outage monitoring site.
Those affected include Seattle-based companies such as Amazon, Valve’s Steam games platform, Microsoft, Expedia and Costco, among many other brands and national sites.
There are initial reports that the outage was related to issues on a major content delivery network, Akamai, which posted at 9:47 a.m. PT that it had identified and resolved the issue.
We have implemented a fix for this issue and based on current observations the service is resuming normal operations. We will continue to monitor to ensure that the impact has been fully mitigated.

Although it was (thankfully) short-lived, the widespread nature of the outage shows how the internet is still subject to single points of failure.
Update: Akamai said his problem was not related to a cyber attack.
We are continuing to monitor the situation and can confirm that this is not a cyber attack on the Akamai platform.
