According to a report by Jason Schreier of Kotaku, Amazon Game Studios has quietly fired dozens of employees yesterday during the last day of E3 2019. Amazon began developing games in 2010, announcing the move to development of AAA games with a real Amazon Game Studios in 2014, previously focused mainly on mobile games. Two years after the studio's first announcement at the TwitchCon in September 2016, they unveiled their first three games: Break away, Crucible, and New world. Break away (Our 2017 survey) was canceled last March.
Since then, we have not heard much about Amazon Game Studios. It would appear that the employees concerned learned yesterday that they had 60 days to look for new positions within Amazon. At the end of this period, if they can not find a job, they will receive severance pay. The same source also informed Kotaku that Amazon had canceled some unannounced games. Although the company did not confirm the exact number of employees to fire, it issued an official statement in Kotaku.
Amazon Game Studios is reorganizing some of its teams to allow us to prioritize the development of New world, Crucibleand new unannounced projects that we are eager to reveal in the future, "said a spokeswoman for the Amazon in a statement. "These changes are the result of regular business planning cycles, in which we align resources with long-term evolving priorities. We work closely with all employees involved with these changes to help them find new roles within Amazon. Amazon is deeply engaged in gaming and continues to invest heavily in Amazon gaming studios, Twitch, Twitch Prime, AWS, our retail activities and other areas within Amazon.
It should also be noted that some of the top developers hired by Amazon Game Studios after the move to AAA development, such as Portal director Kim Swift and Far Cry 2 Director Clint Hocking has since left the company and has never shipped any securities.
