The beta version of Amazon’s MMO New World dropped yesterday. It was quite popular, with reports of up to 187,000 simultaneous players at times. But while New Worlds made the news for its popularity yesterday, it’s making waves today for a whole different reason: it’s about frying graphics cards.

Strange New World

It is impossible to overstate how strange this is. Around 10 years ago, apps like Furmark were capable of damaging GPUs because they behaved more like thermal viruses than real software. AMD and Nvidia have both taken steps to limit these types of workloads and have built algorithms into their own drivers to detect them.
