DETROIT – Three nights, three rookie pitchers, three more wins.
Matt Manning, the last of the Tigers ‘young starters’ parade, pitched six solid innings to lead Detroit to a 4-2 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night at Comerica Park.
The Tigers (46-51) are now 6-0 since the All-Star break, while the Rangers (35-61) have been outscored 47-5 since the break and have an eight-game losing streak in the total.
Manning allowed just two points, including one earned, in the longest start of his young career. He struck out four career-high batters and had 11 hits and misses, most of them on his fast pitch.
Casey Mize started the opener on Monday, followed by Tarik Skubal on Tuesday night.
The Tigers have undoubtedly hit three home runs against Rangers starter Jordan Lyles.
Robbie Grossman extended his career-best 20-game baseline streak with a solo homerun in the first. Zack Short hit a two-run homer just inside the left field line in the second. Akil Baddoo added a solo shot in the fifth.
Although Gregory Soto had a generally unpredictable ninth round, he ultimately won the save. The Tigers relievers pitched 11 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits. They took out 16 and only walked one.
The Tigers are one win away from matching their 2019 season tally, when they were 47-114.
New Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff attended the game and received a good standing ovation from the crowd. The Lions begin training camp next week.
