AMD powered Chromebook 14 HP at $ 199 US this week – About Chromebooks

Although I generally scour weekly ads to find discounts on high-end Chromebooks, because I tend to use them, this week, I focus on the low end. Best Buy sells the HP Chromebook 14 with AMD processor priced at $ 199, which represents a saving of $ 70 compared to the model's entry price of $ 269.

Note that the weekly online announcement has forced me to add the HP Chromebook 14 to my cart before displaying the price.

My practical test of the Chromebook 14 HP at CES last January suggested that the plastic chassis device offers roughly the performance of an Intel Celeron Chromebook. Do not expect a high-end performance at a low price, it's the best way to set your expectations.

Here is an overview of the specifications of the HP Chromebook 14:

  • AMD Dual Core A4-9120C 2.2 GHz with Radeon R4 graphics card (fanless)
  • 4GB of memory
  • 32 GB of eMMC storage
  • Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.2
  • Front HD webcam
  • 180 degree hinge
  • Trackpad with multiple gestures, no keyboard backlight
  • microSD card reader
  • Two speakers tuned by B & O
  • 2 USB Type-C 3.1 ports, 2 USB Type-A ports
  • Battery life expected around 9 hours
  • A weight of 3.4 pounds
  • Support for Android apps in the Google Play Store

I suspect that the AMD processor and graphics processor are somewhat delayed by slow memory modules: the 4 GB of DDR4 RAM runs at a relatively slow frequency of 1.6 MHz. This choice, the absence of backlit keyboard and 720p panel can reduce prices, making it an affordable laptop under Chrome OS.

I would say it's worth looking at as a secondary device for those who already have a good laptop or a Chromebook. I view it as our shared "Family Room" Chromebook because we all tend to browse the web or check our emails in front of the TV during commercials.

The HP Chromebook 14 could also be a good laptop for young people: it is surely capable of what kids could do for school or online entertainment and if it breaks for any reason, you will not feel not like a huge investment.
