AMD to unveil next Radeon RX 6000 video card on March 3

It appears AMD is preparing to launch the next part of its RDNA2 / RX 6000 family of video cards. This afternoon, the company sent out an invitation to save the date to the press and the public, announcing that the company will be hosting an announcement related to Radeon next Wednesday, March 3.rd. And with an image of a never-before-seen Radeon video card included with the announcement, AMD leaves little ambiguity about their plans.

The event, officially dubbed “Where Gaming Begins Episode 3”, will be another Radeon-focused event, where AMD “will present the latest addition to the Radeon RX family of high performance graphics cards”. AMD’s previous two WGB events were pre-recorded presentations, so we’d expect the same here.

The cornerstone of this announcement will be the introduction of a new Radeon video card. Essentially giving us half the product announcement ahead of time, AMD also released a short looping video of the card, highlighting the sizable card and its open-air cooler with two axial fans. With that in mind, we’re almost certainly looking at what a Radeon RX 6700 card will be like. AMD launched the RDNA2 family with the best cards and GPU (Navi 21) first, so this is the next step in the expected filtering of RDNA2. in cheaper video cards.

We’ll know more about the card next week of course, but I would expect to see it positioned to compete with NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 3060 series, with today’s announcement by AMD clearly intended to be a bit a spoiler ahead of NVIDIA’s launch tomorrow. Currently AMD’s product stack stops at $ 579 RX 6800, so it will be interesting to see exactly where this next video card comes in – whether it will be positioned closer to the $ 400 RTX 3060 Ti, or the RTX 3060. (nominally) $ 329. AMD and NVIDIA’s GPUs have been slightly misaligned this generation as evidenced by the performance of Navi 21, so I won’t be too surprised if this upcoming Navi (Navi 22) GPU floats the same way between NVIDIA’s GA106 and GA104. .

Finally, I think we will also hear some software related news from AMD. The company has demonstrated its ability to bundle software news into these hardware announcements, seeking to make the most of these important and highly visible product launches. So I wouldn’t expect AMD to just talk about the new video card for more than 15 minutes.
