Americans dramatically overestimate risk of hospitalization for vaxxed, Democrats miss target more than others

Don’t worry if you feel confused, uncertain, or scared of COVID-19 vaccines.

You’re not alone.

A new Gallup poll, released on Monday, shows that most Americans are hugely mistaken about much of the information about the virus’s worst effects.

Gallup noted that last month he asked nearly 3,200 adults two basic questions:

What percentage of unvaccinated people have been hospitalized because of the coronavirus? What percentage of fully vaccinated people have been hospitalized because of the coronavirus?

“For vaccinated and unvaccinated populations, very few adults gave a correct response,” Gallup reported. “Only 8% of American adults gave correct answers for the unvaccinated population and 38% for the vaccinated population.”

The pollster noted that respondents’ political party affiliation was a factor in the response, which may reflect how President Joe Biden’s often conflicting COVID-19 policies are interpreted and explained by both the administration and the media.

For example, when asked what percentage of non-vaxxed people end up in hospital, 41% of Democrats said the result was 50% or more. That compared to just 26 percent of independents and just 22 percent of Republicans.

Reducing it a bit, 38% of Democrats set the ratio for non-vaxxed people between 10% and 50%. By comparison, 34% of independents and 32% of Republicans fell into this category.

The correct answer, according to Gallup, is that about 0.89% of unvaccinated people end up hospitalized because of COVID.

Gallup observed that, given the CDC’s claims about the effectiveness rate of shots, Democrats were better than Republicans at characterizing hospitalization rates among vaxxes.

The pollster calculated the hospitalization rate for those who were bitten at 0.01%. Among Democrats, 41% said less than 1% of them ended up in hospital, compared to 33% of Republicans and 37% of independents.

At the other end of the scale, just 6% of Democrats said 20% or more of vaxxes would be hospitalized, while 20% of Republicans and 13% of independents gave a similar response.

“In light of previous studies on the effects of media and information during COVID,” Gallup noted of this response, “one possible reason is that Democrats are more systematically exposed to information that describes favorably the vaccine efficacy “.

Summarizing the findings, Gallup observed: “Democrats are more likely to exaggerate the risks of hospitalization for unvaccinated people, which may fuel efforts, often led by Democratic Party leaders, to enforce both the mask and vaccine warrants. At the same time, Republicans overestimate the risks to those vaccinated, leading to very low estimates of the vaccine’s effectiveness. This may be one of the reasons why so many Republicans have hesitated to get vaccinated against COVID-19. “

“Previous research links these patterns of behavior to differences in information exposure,” the pollster concluded. “If so, acceptance of the vaccine is unlikely to increase significantly among Republicans until their trusted media or other news sources emphasize the benefits of the vaccine. vaccination. “

On the other hand, Gallup did not explain two critical points.

First, some of the highest vaccine hesitancy rates in the country are found among black Americans, relatively few of whom are registered as Republicans or account for the conservative media.

Gallup’s other downside was pointing out that the draconian crackdown on unvaccinated people in the Blue States, such as sacking healthcare workers and first responders who don’t get the hang of it and demand that the unvaccinated are socially excluded, are motivated by a fear of them created by politicians and the media who refuse to discuss natural immunity and the prevalence of asymptomatic spread, and who bypass other data, such as reports according to who 59% of Israeli COVID hospitalizations are fully vaxxed, as are the majority of Floridians seeking treatment at some of their state monoclonal antibody centers.
