Regarding the Mueller inquiry, Democrats and Republicans can only agree on the fairness of the report, according to a new poll released by Washington Post-ABC News.
Despite this partisan division, the majority of Americans agree on a number of issues, including the fact that Trump lied to the public about issues that the Special Council investigated and that indictment for obstruction to Mueller's investigation is a bad idea.
The investigation by special advocate Robert Mueller, which lasted two years, focused on Russia's participation in the 2016 Trump campaign, as well as allegations that Trump would have hindered this investigation. It was found that Russian actors had tried to interfere in the 2016 presidential election, but had not found the Trump campaign conspired with these actors. This left open the question of obstruction.
The survey, conducted in mid-April, found that 53 percent of Democrats, 56 percent of Republicans and 51 percent of Independents viewed the Mueller report as "fair and impartial".
Most Americans agreed that Trump had lied to the public about Mueller's under investigation – 58% believe it. However, the division of supporters between the respondents was blatant in this case: 90% of Democrats said that Trump had lied, while only 19% of Republicans were of the same opinion. The independents helped form the majority of respondents who believed that Trump had lied, 61% of them saying the president was not honest with the public.
After the report was released, some Democrats, including presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren, called on Congress to begin Trump's impeachment process, arguing Mueller's evidence on the issue of the obstruction sought. to legislators.
Overall, a majority of Americans oppose impeachment, with only 37% of them favoring the launch of the process and 56% of opponents. Not surprisingly, support for the removal of President Trump is divided along partisan lines.
Most Democrats – 62% – are in favor of opening an impeachment procedure, and 53% of Democrats said they strongly believe that the House should start charging Trump. Almost all Republican respondents were against indictment; 87% said they oppose it, 78% strongly opposed. The independents were also largely unfavorable, with only 36 per cent of the view that dismissal should begin.
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, said she was in no hurry to charge him.
"It's also important to know that facts about the president's accountability can be obtained outside imputation hearings," Pelosi wrote in a letter. "As we discover the truth and present the additional reforms needed to protect our democracy, we must show the American people that we proceed without passions or prejudices, strictly on the presentation of the facts."
While perhaps feeling the ardor of their base, however, other Democratic leaders such as representatives, Adam Schiff and Elijah Cummings, made it clear that the party leadership was leaving its options open.
"The level of evidence in the Mueller report is serious and overwhelming and, under normal circumstances, would not pose a problem with respect to impenetrable offenses," said Schiff.
However, Pelosi could be wise because the number of Americans calling for impeachment has declined over time. In August 2018, 49% of respondents felt that President Trump should be removed.
The publication of the Mueller report has hardly changed, it is the public opinion of the president. Those of the Republican Party who had supported it before the publication of the report seem inclined to continue to do so; 64% said the report did not change their opinion of the Trump administration (23% said Mueller's work allowed them to consider Trump more positively). A similar division was found among Democrats: 52% of them said they had not changed their minds following the report (41% said they saw Trump more negatively after).
President Trump's overall approval rating was hardly affected by the report and remained low at just 39 percent.
