COVID-19 cases continue to explode across the United States, including here in our region.
Pennsylvania and New Jersey reported their highest single-day cases on Saturday.
Now, the governors of six northeastern states are practically meeting this weekend to discuss possible next steps.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced an emergency summit with six governors; New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf are among the participants.
Cuomo said the goal was to discuss possible coordination restrictions to help stop the spread as cases continue to rise.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health announced an additional 5,551 positive cases on Saturday.
Although the Commonwealth has not released plans for further mitigation efforts, Health Secretary Dr Rachel Levine reported earlier this week that all options are on the table.
“We can’t predict the future of what mitigation orders might be needed at a future date. What we want to do is double the mitigation orders we have in place to prevent the spread,” he said. said Dr Levine.
New Jersey health officials reported 4,391 cases on Saturday.
“We are ready to fight this second wave,” Governor Murphy said.
In a tweet on Saturday afternoon, Murphy said: “These numbers are alarming and concerning, to say the least. Wear a mask. Social distancing. Stay safe.”
Even as the numbers rise, health officials in both states say they are more prepared to test and treat patients than they were in the spring.
On Saturday evening, Governor Wolf’s office told 69 News that states participating in this weekend’s summit plan to release details next week.
