An Alabama police officer was shot dead; woman accused of murder, authorities say

An Alabama police officer died after being shot in a "domestic" incident, police said Friday.

The wife of the officer was arrested and charged in connection with the death, according to reported information.

Police arrived at the Gardendale site in the north of Birmingham, north of Birmingham on Thursday night, and found a man "shot and wounded," according to a statement posted on Facebook by the Gardendale Police Department. The man was transported to an emergency room and his death was pronounced early Friday morning.

"During the initial investigation, we discovered that the victim was a police officer from the Vestavia Hills Police Department," police said. "We can tell you that the incident was domestic in nature."

The Vestavia Hills Police Department confirmed the identity of the deceased man as 42-year-old officer Andrew Kimbrel. He had been a patrol officer, school resource officer and evidence technician, the department said.

"ANDY was loved by his fellow officers and the community he chose to protect in. The Vestavia Police Department is grateful to the community for their continued support during this difficult time," the statement said.

Gardendale police later revealed in a follow-up article on Facebook that a warrant had been obtained against Stephanie Nicole Keller, 43, for murder. She has since been arrested and charged, according to reports.

Keller, detained with a $ 100,000 bail, was Kimbrel's wife, reported the Associated Press.

The officer is survived by two children, reported WBRC-TV, a Birmingham FOX affiliate.
