An ‘alien’ costume prototype is up for auction

He terrorized the inhabitants of Sigourney Weaver’s spaceship in the 1979 sci-fi film “Alien” – and now the salivating alien can bring chaos and horror into your home too.

In honor of so-called “Alien” Day, April 26, Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills are accepting offers on a translucent Big Chap costume prototype, as fans refer to the titular Xenomorph.

The unofficial vacation is inspired by the name of the moon Big Chap lives on – LV-426, hence 04/26 – where human crew members including Weaver, Harry Dean Stanton, Ian Holm and John Hurt ( of explosive stomach fame) touch each other in Ridley Scott’s Oscar-winning film.

Even though the prototype did not end up in the actual film – Scott opted for a later, more opaque version – diehard fans are clamoring to purchase the previous full-size model designed by surrealist Swiss artist and sculptor HR Giger .

The specimen is expected to fetch between $ 40,000 and $ 60,000.

“[It] remains Giger’s true and original vision of one of the most significant and iconic sci-fi monsters of all time, ”said Martin Dolan, Executive Director of Julien. “This is the first opportunity for the public to have the chance to take ownership of what could be HR Giger’s most important work, more than four decades after its creation.”

The venous prototype – which includes a complex oral breathing apparatus on the back – was designed to be worn by 6-foot-10-inch Nigerian visual artist Bolaji Badejo, touted as the alien for his unusually long legs.

The costume’s lips were made of latex condoms, while the final rendition incorporated real human bones, including a skull inside its cylindrical head.

For the frightened cats who find Big Chap too grotesque for their tastes, a number of less alarming articles also fall under the hammer of the “Alien” franchise. They include the flight suits worn by Weaver and Winona Ryder in “Alien: Resurrection” from 1997.

Other sci-fi lots offered in the same “Hollywood Sci-Fi, Action, Fantasy and More” auction include the jet pilot outfit worn by Will Smith in the 1996 film “Independence Day”, the original space dock (with lights!) from “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” from 1979 and an authentic Imperial Scout Blaster “Scout Biker” used in “Return of The Jedi” in 1983.
