An herbalist who ordered the family of a 13-year-old diabetic boy to apply lavender oil on his spine instead of using insulin was imprisoned in California after the boy died from a type 1 complications.

Timothy Morrow, 84, was sentenced Monday for practicing medicine without a license, as well as for a charge of mistreatment of a child that could cause serious bodily harm or death, for which he pleaded no appeal.

Prosecutors told the court how Morrow, founder of Common Sense Herbs, began "healing" Edgar Lopez after his mother went to one of his interviews, KTLA reported. Morrow advised the family to prevent the boy from using his diabetes medications soon after, telling them that it was a "poison". He advised them to use herbs, including lavender, which he sells on his website.

Lopez became ill shortly after his family followed Morrow's advice. He struggled to keep his food and lost a lot of weight, had difficulty breathing and was cold to the touch. At this point, the herbalist told the family that his son was going through a "healing crisis" and had advised them not to seek the help of a doctor, reported the Washington Post.

"He told us that if we took the child to the hospital, he would be killed there," his father Delfino Lopez Solis told the jury last week during his two-day trial. weeks. The next day, the boy died at home.

"The medical examiner determined that the victim would have lived if he had received appropriate medical treatment," said a statement from the US Attorney's Office.

The defense told the court that all herbs "prescribed" by Morrow had the warning "this product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease" on the label, according to ABC News. However, the mother told the court that the herbalist had described her "pancreas reg" (pancreatic regeneration protein) as "the insulin of God" and that it could be used instead of the actual insulin.

The court learned that his mother, Madrigal, had been "brainwashed" by Morrow, who claims on his website that he has cured his own cancer. Before her son's death, she refused to give Edgar insulin while he had asked for it, believing in Morrow when he told her that it was poison.

"On my last call [to Morrow], my son said to him: can I call 911, can I call 911? ", the jury told ABC, Madrigal told the jury. My son could not breathe. "

Morrow told them no.

This may not be the only case in which Morrow advised people to stop receiving medical treatment. The widow of a cancer patient told the jury that his wife, Carol Anne Waisanen, had used a herbal "treatment" instead of conventional medicine, on Morrow's advice, reports WFTV.

Morrow was sentenced to four months in prison in Los Angeles County Jail and ordered to pay $ 5,000 to the victim's family to cover the funeral expenses.
