SPRINGFIELD (WKOW) – A person died in Illinois after being hospitalized for a serious respiratory illness after recently being breathed, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.
If health officials decided that it was related to vaping, it would be the first in the country.
Up to 50 people in at least six states have contracted respiratory diseases that may be related to e-cigarettes or other vaping products.
Wisconsin has had several cases, including cases in the elderly.
The number of reported cases in Illinois who used electronic or vaporized cigarettes and who were hospitalized for respiratory symptoms doubled last week.
Affected individuals experienced respiratory symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath and fatigue. Some also had vomiting and diarrhea.
The symptoms worsened for days or weeks before admission to the hospital.
"The seriousness of the disease that people are living is alarming and we need to make it clear that the use of e-cigarettes and vaping can be dangerous," said the director of the IDPH, Dr. Ngozi Ezike. "We asked a team of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help us investigate these cases and they arrived in Illinois on Tuesday."
