An Indianapolis police officer faces numerous criminal charges for striking a 17-year-old student, prosecutors said Monday.
Robert Lawson has been charged with murder, obstruction of justice, perjury, false information and official misconduct following the August 29 incident at the high school. Shortridge, announced Marion County Attorney Terry Curry.
Lawson is accused of having hit a student in the jaw without warning when he was called to school to defuse a big fight. The video shows the boy falling to the ground. Lawson claimed that he was defending himself.
Police Chief Bryan Roach said he would recommend the dismissal of Lawson and that the department will use the incident to "identify ways to improve the situation."

In a statement released Monday, the Indianapolis Public Schools supported the impeachment decision stating, "We will continue to work with all members of our community to ensure that all our children enjoy the benefits of their children. a safe and secure learning environment. "

Lawson is suspended without pay. It was not immediately known if he had a lawyer who could comment.
