The gesture navigation tools introduced with Android 9 Pie have eliminated the need for the Recent Apps button. The default gesture navigation configuration now consists of two buttons: the home "pill" icon and the return button, which is displayed when needed.
However, according to some old Android Q codes obtained by XDA developers, the Back button may not be available on the next iteration of Android.
according to XDA search, the home button will act as a back button and recent application button all in one. Users will be able to drag the button to the left when they want to grab an action back. The button slides slightly to the left, then backs up, giving the user some sort of tactile feedback indicating that the input has been correctly recorded.

Plus, a simple slip of the right pill icon will allow you to switch from the open app to the most recent app on your list. Another shot on the right will go to the application before, and so on. If you perform this gesture when you are on the home screen (that is, without any foreground application), the new screen of the recent apps will appear, which will allows you to scroll through all your applications.
If this new method of navigation actually matches what Android Q will eventually have, it will represent another major change in the way users navigate Android. However, it may be that preliminary tests and the navigation system that we saw in Android 9 Pie will end up in Android Q. It is too early to say that this new method will be finalized.
