“Device Personalization Services” is the method by which Google provides and updates features like Now Playing (on Pixel), Live Caption, and Smart Actions in notifications to Android devices. This app, updated via the Play Store, is now renamed “Android System Intelligence”, at least on Google Pixel phones.

Update 9/12: In recent weeks, the “The renaming of device personalization services “to” Android System Intelligence “is widely deployed on Pixel devices, specifically including the name of the app in the settings and widget list.

The UPS now also appears in the Play Store listing with a brand new icon that replaces the previous corner radial. The new logo is a 3 × 3 grid of blue dots with a few connections. It represents the relationships between data points. The following The Android System Intelligence version will likely update the icon on the device to match.

Original 8/1: The functionality offered by DPS differs from device to device, with the most comprehensive experience found on Pixel. On Google phones, you have the option to see subtitles for all media being played – since extended to other OEMs, Screen Attention powered by the camera to make sure your screen doesn’t turn off on standby while watching it, and Now Playing.

The latter listens to songs playing in the background and quickly identifies them on your lock screen or at the bottom of the notification shade. You can also place it on the home screen with a widget accessible via the usual long press.

You may have recently noticed that the “Now Playing History” widget is now at the very top of this list because it is no longer listed in Device Personalization Services. On the contrary, Google decided to rename it “Android System Intelligence” with the R.22.playstore.pixel3.386404629 version of the application. This update is not yet widely deployed and so far we’ve only seen it on a Pixel 3 running Android 11. Third-party devices where Live Caption is available will likely see the new name as well.

It’s also renamed on the “App Info” page, but “Device Personalization Services” is still in Settings> Privacy, where you can clear any local data your device has learned. From there, you can also determine if you want to see the “smart text suggestions in the keyboard suggestion strip, including smart reply and paste.”

Other features powered by Android System Intelligence, which share the same icons as DPS, are improved copy / paste and smart text selection. When users highlight a phone number, they get a shortcut to open the Phone app and dial or launch Google Maps with addresses.

Google previously renamed Pixel’s “Connectivity Health” app to “Adaptive Connectivity Services”. Overall, Android System Intelligence is a better and more descriptive name than DPS, especially when searching for Now Playing.
