Fox News former US attorney and attorney Andy McCarthy said it was "ridiculous" for some Democrats to complain about Attorney General William Barr's examination of the origins of the investigation into Russia.

Barr commissioned John Durham, a US attorney in Connecticut, to review the genesis of the Russian investigation and determine whether the intelligence-gathering efforts for the Trump campaign were "legal and appropriate".

Former CIA director John Brennan insisted on MSNBC on Tuesday that monitoring of the Trump campaign was subject to "rigorous due process" and had been approved by the FISA court.

All Republican efforts to present surveillance as a "deep state" operation are a false representation, said Brennan.

Appearing in "America's Newsroom" on Wednesday, McCarthy said all of this was part of a "surveillance exercise," as intelligence agencies' internal oversight bodies are expected to provide oversight, in concert with Congress.

He stated that he wanted a thorough investigation into how the Justice Ministry and FBI officials had submitted information to the FISA court, as well as why the FISA court had justified Granting certain mandates to Trump campaign partners, mainly Carter Page.

"If what Director Brennan says is true, what's worrying him?" McCarthy said.
