A mass COVID-19 vaccination site in Roseville is closed for two days to host a previously scheduled anime swap meet, a decision defended by event organizers.
The Placer County Fairgrounds, renamed The Grounds in 2017, has hosted vaccine appointments but is expected to close April 1-2 for the SacAnime event. The Placer County COVID vaccine appointment site shows the fairground as “closed for on-site event” Thursday and Friday.
SacAnime defended the spring exchange meeting, saying it offered to work with the county to accommodate both the event and the continuation of vaccinations, but the county refused.
“Our Swap Meet has been scheduled since October 2020 and has been publicly announced since then,” SacAnime said in a statement. “We worked with the Placer County Department of Health and the Placer County Fairgrounds to organize this Swap Meet safely and within parameters, as we did in September and October in the past. same event center.
A county representative told the Sacramento Bee that evening overtime has been added Monday through Wednesday to make up for the shutdown. Plus, most dates at The Grounds are for second doses.
The response from social media, however, has been harsh. An article posted Monday on SacAnime’s Facebook page contains hundreds of comments on whether the event should continue as the pandemic still impacts public safety.
“Considering that the majority of Californians can’t get their shots until April 15 at the earliest, that doesn’t seem like smart or safe at all,” one comment read. “Wait like all other crooks, there are more important things in life than this.”
According to the Placer County Vaccine Dashboard, the county has distributed nearly 200,000 total doses; about 74% of its population aged 65 and over received at least one dose.
