Yolo County health workers on Wednesday issued a notice calling on all residents, even those who are fully vaccinated, to wear masks in indoor public places due to the increasing spread of the highly transmissible Delta variant. The opinion is a recommendation and not an obligation.
“Residents who have been vaccinated are strongly recommended to wear masks indoors where vaccination verification is not required and the vaccination status of others is unknown,” said health workers in the county just south of Sacramento. “Unvaccinated people are still required to wear masks in indoor public spaces. “
The announcement comes after Los Angeles County began recommending masks in indoor public spaces, regardless of vaccination status.
California Governor Gavin Newsom said last week there was no immediate plan to implement a statewide requirement.
“If we keep getting people vaccinated it will be pointless and this is the call for anyone who has not been vaccinated to get vaccinated,” Newsom said, as reported by ABC 7 News.
The Delta variant, also known as B.1.617.2, accounts for 58% of new COVID-19 cases across the country, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
As of mid-April, Yolo County has detected 59 cases of the Delta variant, according to the county statement. The variant accounted for 76% of positive samples collected on the UC Davis campus and through the Healthy Yolo Together tests between June 27 and July 7.
“In making yesterday’s new recommendations for fully vaccinated people to resume indoor masking and get tested after exposure, I am being cautious to slow the spread of the highly infectious Delta variant,” said the Dr Aimee, Yolo County Health Officer. Sisson in a statement: “Vaccines remain the absolute best form of protection against COVID-19, and I implore all eligible people to get their full vaccine as soon as possible. At the same time, we know that our vaccines, while very effective, are not perfect. Putting a mask indoors in environments where you can’t be sure everyone who is unmasked is fully immunized is an easy way to add another layer of protection against COVID-19. “
