A private residence designed by Frank Lloyd Wright hit the auction block in St. Joseph, Michigan, joining a host of other Wright homes that have entered the real estate market in the past year alone.
Listing just under $ 2 million, the Harper House was last seen 25 years ago and is said to be the architect’s last home designed in the state of Michigan before his death in 1959.
Wright built the L-shaped house for a local doctor in 1950. It was lived in by the client until her death in a car accident three years later and has since been in the care of a couple from the region that had previously restored the 3,150 square-foot residence.
Featuring Wright’s common Chicago brick material, stained glass windows, and a large room with a Baldwin grand piano and furniture from Donghia, the four-bedroom home is defined by expansive views of Lake Michigan and a mix of sloping and flat roofs thanks to an addition designed by Wright’s sidekick Charles Montooth.
A number of Wright-designed homes have sought new owners in recent months. In July, Freeman House, owned by Wright University in Southern California appeared on the market. Another earlier house that also needed to be preserved was purchased last month by a Chicago-area couple already with a Wright Restoration under their belt in Ohio.
