Another race horse was lost in Santa Anita on Thursday, officials said at the famous California racecourse, bringing to 22 the number of deaths since Christmas.

The 3-year-old princess Lili B, coached by David Bernstein, suffered a catastrophic injury during a training session shortly before 9 am and had to be shot, said Santa Anita and officials of the State.

The series of deadly spills prompted officials to suspend the run on the runway on March 3 and began allowing workouts on the main runway on Monday.

Among the canceled races was the $ 600,000 Santa Anita Handicap.

Although fatal accidents are a constant threat in horse racing, the number of recent deaths is remarkable. There were 10 horse deaths in Santa Anita from December 26th to March 5th in 2017-2018, 11 in 2016-2017 during the same period and 16 in 2015-2016, according to data from the California Horse Racing Board.

Santa Anita, located about 20 km northeast of downtown Los Angeles, opened on Christmas Day 1934 and is one of the oldest tracks in the sport.

Known as "The Great Race Place", iconic horses like Azucar, Seabiscuit, Spectacular Bid, Affirmed, American Pharoah and Justify ran on the oval of Arcadia, California.
