Another elementary school in Rockdale County is closed Friday after several dozens of other students have been suspected of norovirus.

Shoal Creek Elementary, in the central part of the county, interrupted its classes two days later, with a high number of absences. On Wednesday, 90 students and one staff member were ill and on Thursday, this number rose to 120 students and five staff, depending on the school system.

Cindy Ball, a spokesperson for Rockdale County Public Schools, said the County Health Department suspected the Norovirus was causing illness.

According to the Atlanta-based Center for Disease Control and Prevention, norovirus causes inflammation of the stomach or intestines and can cause vomiting and diarrhea. A person usually develops symptoms 12 to 48 hours after being exposed to the virus and most people recover in one to three days.

Pine Street Elementary, north of Conyers, was also closed due to a suspicion of norovirus on Wednesday and Thursday. The school was open Friday, Ball said.

Ball said the school system, as he did at Pine Street, is working closely with the health department to ensure that all recommended cleaning protocols are followed at Shoal Creek.

By closing the school on Friday, she said that it "allows for further deep cleaning and also offers the opportunity to break the cycle of transmission." Shoal Creek is expected to reopen on Monday.
