BELLOWS FALLS – Rockingham School principal Jason Terry has resigned from the board, which already has one member down.
Terry said on Friday that he wanted to devote more time to his work on the board of trustees at Bellows Falls Union High School. He was elected to the high school board of directors last March; he was elected to the Rockingham Board of Directors in March 2020.
“People are too dispersed,” said Terry. “They are doing their best. “
Terry and David Clark, a member of the Westminster BFUHS board of directors who resigned as chairman of the board of directors of the North East Windham Supervisory Union on Wednesday evening, both said that they wanted to spend more time troubleshooting the high school HVAC system, which was the subject of two engineering reviews.
Terry declined to say what prompted his resignation, which came shortly after the controversial Windham Northeast Surveillance Union meeting on Wednesday night.
“I’m going to take the high road,” he said, noting that he would let his resignation letter speak for him.
“Last night it became very clear that I needed to devote more of my time to the high school council and not the Rockingham council. My concern is that we have immediate problems with the HVAC system which seems to have been neglected for a long time and I want to be available for the new manager, Mr. Broadley, ”Terry wrote.
“In my 18 months or so on the Rockingham Board of Directors, I feel like I have made a positive impact and have done my best to do the right thing for the kids,” a- he added.
“It also became very clear during the executive session that we have issues within the monitoring union that need to be resolved. I also feel bad about leaving the Rockingham board of directors because I was the representatives for the teachers’ contract negotiations, ”he wrote.
“I am very confident that Directors Kerry Kennedy, Susan Johnson and Laura Hazard as well as Nurses Jennifer Burke and Kat Goodell for the Rockingham District will do great things. The teachers have worked really hard during this whole pandemic and I really hoped to reward them appropriately for their excellent work, ”he said.
Terry said he felt bad about leaving the Rockingham board, especially since he was on the bargaining committee and had hoped to reward teachers and support staff for their hard work during the last year of the coronavirus pandemic.
Rockingham School Board President Priscilla Lambert said on Friday the board would consider Terry’s resignation letter at its next meeting on September 20. She said the board hopes to appoint a new member at this meeting to fill the vacancy left over the past summer by former board chairman George Smith.
Lambert said she hadn’t told Terry about his resignation, but she hinted that she was hoping he would reconsider his decision. “The board will respect its decision,” she said.
But she said the various school boards and principals of the Windham Northeast Supervisory Union had just gone through “an intense week.”
“We need to be sure, gentle and caring about each and every member of our board of directors,” said Lambert, who had spoken to Clark about what she described as an autocratic approach to finding an interim superintendent.
Lambert declined to identify the person who applied for the remaining time as Smith’s position on the board.
The other members of the board are Jason Benson and Megan Applegate. Benson was also elected in March 2020 and Applegate was appointed last October to a vacant post created by the resignation of Rick Holloway, also a former chairman. Applegate was elected on her own in March to fulfill the unexpired term initially held by Holloway.
