A co-founder of an anti-vaccination mandate group in Hawaii is leaving the organization after obtaining COVID-19. He also warns others to avoid large crowds and gatherings to prevent the spread.
Last October, Chris Wikoff helped found the Aloha Freedom Coalition because he believed that closures and government mandates were ruining businesses and threatening the freedoms of individuals.
“They were talking about vaccine passports and vaccination warrants and it seemed like it was excessive totalitarianism and oversight,” Wikoff said. “We have been told that the COVID virus is not that deadly – it is nothing more than a little flu. I can tell you it’s more than a little flu.”
Wikoff, a 66-year-old retiree, believes he was infected with the Delta variant during a religious event in August. He was sent first to Queen’s Medical Center West and then to Queen’s Medical Center downtown due to lack of bed space.
“Now I was in a bed. I can’t move, I can’t breathe,” he said. “I was afraid of dying.”
Even though he has been treated with Remdesivir, Wikoff has yet to be vaccinated but has said he is considering doing so.
“It would probably be more dangerous to get COVID again than to get the reaction from the vaccines,” he added.
He also warns others not to participate in rallies and protests his coalition helps organize, saying: “I think we should be more concerned about security than protests. I think people shouldn’t get together in large groups for the purpose of protesting. “
“I feel bad for this gentleman,” Lt. Gov. Josh Green said. “He was obviously receiving bad advice and I feel very bad that many innocent people refused to be vaccinated because they listened to these scare tactics.”
